Ethical Issues in Business
Ethical issues refers to the situation that require the individual to make choices between what the society sees as wrong or unethical of what the society views as right or ethical. In every organization, there is what is seen as acceptable and unacceptable from the norms set by the society. Sometimes the ethical issues in the organization are not attractive thus there is a motivation for businesses and individual to engage in unethical practices. Some of unethical issues that are indulged by the business organization include infringement of copyright laws, reduction of the prices in order to drive other competitors out of business. The business organization may also indulge in unethical marketing campaigns where the companies misrepresent facts as they are with the aim of making higher sales. Some business organizations also do not warn the consumers of their products on the side effects of the products that come as a result of the consumer using the product.
In the case study presented, Physician Reference Service (PRS) engaged in unethical business practices. Physician Reference Service infringed the copyright laws by copying the key features of the software designed by the competitor’s firm, Compu-Med and offering it as a substitute product in the market. Copyright laws are laws enacted to give the business organization the monopoly rights to produce and distribute the product they have innovated for a period of time as set by laws of that state. From the definition of the copyright law the Physician Reference Service infringed the copyright laws as it produced the product that were similar to their client’s and thus having undue advantage to their clients. Physician Reference Service has an obligation of protecting their clients which in this case pose to be the threat the very clients they are supposed to protect. It is unethical for the Physician Reference Service to train its employees the services offered by Compu-Med who poses as a client and thus receiving the information that is sensitive to the Compu-Med (Granof & Khumawala, 2010).
